Harry Merlin Samuelson, 74, died Feb. 19 of natural causes following surgery. He died at home as he wished.

He was born in Grandin, N.D., to Harry and Ina (Thorson) Samuelson. He grew up on a farm near Leonard, Minn., where he attended District 31 grade school and Clearbrook High School. Always top of his class, he could even take time off to earn money cutting Christmas trees and still come back and re-take his spot on top.

He entered the Air Force at 17 and met his wife, Thelma, while in Texas.

He enjoyed all sports and actively played baseball and golf as often as possible.

He worked in metallurgy and lived in Minnesota, California and in Oregon for the past 30 years.

Survivors include his wife; children and spouses Merlin Dale and Judy of Albany, Gayle and Jack Carpentier of San Francisco, and Suzy Samuelson of Milwaukie; sisters Jan Wilson of Albany, and Jean Risseeuw and husband Butch of Willamina; niece Tammy Wilson; nephew Bill Wilson; and grandson John Carpentier.

His parents and brother preceded him in death.

A service was Feb. 27 at Willamette National Cemetery.
